Each person is a specialist in fantasizing their own illusory world. A Spiritual Warrior
Things are not always as they seem. Phaedus
There is a proper balance between not asking enough of oneself and asking or expecting too much. May Sarton
Our personal reality is produced by an ongoing chemical-biological process which processes sensory input into mental images and thoughts. Data from sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell are converted into electrical impulses that stimulate various parts of our brain. New data is compared to previously stored data to produce our unique, one of a kind version of reality. Our reality is not like anyone else’s, nor will it ever be. It is unique.
Who we think we are, is our reality and must coexist with the realities of those around us. Normally our individual versions of reality are similar to others, and we co-mingle relatively well. Some individual’s realities are way out of kilter and totally off base. Some have claimed to be Jesus Christ or Napoleon Bonaparte or other famous individuals. Some even have split personalities and live multiple lives. There are those who are pompous, self-centered and conceited; those fearing the dark and those with various phobias. There are many with reality abnormalities. It is easy to forget our reality is what our brains determine it to be for us.
It is easy to point out other’s distorted realities. We may have a “loose wire or two” ourselves. We may have some quirky reality issues because our thinking may be skewed and distorted. We may be looking through “rose colored glasses”. We may have an error factor; meaning our view of reality is less than perfect. What we think is true and real may not be totally right. We may not see ourselves as we really are. There may be issues, problems, and defects about ourselves that we miss and overlook. We should perform periodic reality checks. Questioning our reasoning, perceptions, and decision making may help keep us on target.
We should use our intellect, experience and wisdom to insure functioning at a high level. Are we truly seeking to know the truth about ourselves? Seeking constant feedback is a good way to do reality checks. Constantly experiencing, questioning, adjusting and making corrections to our misperceptions and errors in judgment are necessary. Our version of reality is really the world in which we live. Whether it is functioning normally, almost normal, or way out of kilter, can be something difficult to get a good handle on. We should not take our perception of reality for granted. Mental and our physical health is priceless, it should be valued and protected.
Challenge: Do you maintain an accurate version of reality? A good start is not taking things for granted. Your self-perception of yourself is your primary reality. If you do not really know who and what you are, guess what? It is critical you learn to know the real you. Take responsibility for what you are and what you are becoming. Do not hide the truth or cover up problems and issues. Bring them into the open and deal with them one by one.
Wisdom: Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives. Sidney Madwed
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 1:1
God knows the truth about who we are. He knows our strengths and weaknesses. He made us and knows everything there is to know about us. We will never have this kind of knowledge about ourselves. God’s purpose is to help us to live to our potential. If we truly seek the truth, God will increasingly reveal things we need in order to become what we are capable of becoming. We cannot get there on our own. We need his help.
Prayer: Help me to remember that this world is temporal, your world is eternal.
