Life Altering Events

Life Altering Events:  those events that shape us and mold us, things that send us in new directions

Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. Edison

You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one. James Froude

The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude. William James

News Flash! Everything that happens to us is a life altering event. There are very impactful events and there are minor life altering events. Some events are so impactful it is like hitting us upside the head with a baseball bat. Many or most are more like a faint breeze. We can be very conscious of them or we can be clueless and unaware. In ways we are static and stagnant, but in many ways we are changing ever so slightly.

Our brain equips us with extremely powerful and sophisticated sensory data gathering and computing capabilities that is more powerful than any computer. To top it off, we are probably on auto-pilot as much as ninety-nine percent of the time. We do not even have to think, most of all our functions are done automatically. There is a blessing and a curse to our design. We take in everything that is happening all around us with very little consciousness required. All of our sensory inputs and bodily functions are reporting to our brain automatically with little or no conscious awareness. All data is processed and compared to all the previous data and experiences that have been processed before. Most new input is subtle and hardly changes who we are. The cumulative total is always who we are. It is everything that has ever happened. It is what currently defines us.

Our programming is being constantly updated. All old data, experiences, and influences is upgraded by all new inputs and changes ever so slightly. Most events are subtle and have very little impact. Sometimes major events happen, such as loss of a love one, loss of employment, illness or other unexpected events. These sensory inputs can be very significant, maybe causing significant changes to us.  If we were as wise as we should be, we would be very conscientious of monitoring and controlling what we allow to influence us. The better the influences, the better will be our upgraded programming and vice versa. It works the same as the food we eat, and the exercise we get; we become whatever is influencing us. It changes us. We are and we are becoming the cumulative effect of all the life altering events that are happening to us every day. It is in our best interests to be more mindful of these impacts. Whether slight or not, things are happening inside us. Everything matters.

Challenge: You are responsible for the person you have become, the person you are becoming and the final product of the person you ultimately become. There is no opting out of the responsibility. The process is ongoing and will continue to be as long as you live and breathe. The choices are to be conscientiously involved and try to influence things for the best results or to be irresponsible and leave the results to random cause and events.

Wisdom: First we make our habits, then our habits make us. Charles C Noble

Spiritual: (NIV)

Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you s well. Matt 6:33

If you believe, your will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. Matthew 21:22

As we struggle through this life, often worrying and wondering what lies ahead, we should always stop and be reminded that God is there. On our own it is so easy to get down and depressed as we think about all the things that may be going wrong or may be about to cause us problems. God tells us that if we believe in him and trust in him that he will see us through all difficulties. He will also, lead us to greener pastures if we follow his lead.

Prayer: Help me to have the kind of faith that does not get bogged down in my day to day struggles.
