Self-Defeat: thought processes, habits and actions resulting in one’s own failures

 If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started. Cicero   

   We are our own worst enemy. There is more truth to this that we can possibly realize. There are many who suffer self-defeat, first through their own thoughts and ultimately by their own actions.

   Many philosophers throughout history have taught us our thoughts greatly influence what we become. If we look at a who’s who list of achievers, philosophers, leaders and change makers throughout history we will not find the names of those who excelled in self-defeat. Such names as Aristotle, Napoleon, Galileo, Di Vinci, Columbus, Lincoln, King, Mandela, Thatcher, and Mother Teresa are not individuals who surrendered to self-defeat. These individuals and thousands like them, both male and female, fought through adversities, personal weaknesses, bad breaks, whatever life threw at them and went on to accomplish something great in their lives. They did not give in to surrender or self-defeat.  

  We are who we are as a result of both external and internal forces and influences constantly impacting us. It is a sign we have gained wisdom when we realize our successes in life comes largely from what we allow to happen inside us. We rise or fall, succeed or fail, realize our dreams or not, based on whether we acquire the mental discipline and attitude that fosters success. We ultimately choose our lot in life one way or the other. The alternative to succeeding is lacking the mental discipline that results in self-defeat. If we allow a self-defeatist attitude to exist within we will be well acquainted with defeat. If we have control of our internal mental processes, we can use the bad things that happen to more acutely focus us even more intensely on finding our way to success.  We learn to turn lemons into lemonade and adversities into successes.

    Those who succeed in life do not engage in self-sabotage. They do not allow a defeatist attitude to have dominating power over them. They have sufficient personal motivation, self-discipline and focus to defeat the feelings of self-defeat that crop up. Those who are not succeeding are their own adversary and own worst enemy. Success or defeat comes primarily from within. We are responsible for what we allow to happen inside us; we develop and foster an attitude toward success or relinquish control to an attitude of self-defeat. What happens in our outside world is largely being predetermined by what has already happened in our inside world.

 Challenge: How you live and function in life is the direct result of the attitude you have chosen. Not only do you become which you think about; your joy, happiness and well-being are directly affected by what governs you. If you are not satisfied, it is time to do something. It requires making some changes. Take responsibility and implement discipline and mental control of what governs your thinking process. You are what you think about.

   We have great creative powers. The typical brain has enormous capabilities to produce thoughts, concepts and ideas that can produce great good as well as evil. Very few of us even come close to using our tremendous abilities. The Bible teaches us we are given talents and abilities and we are expected to be wise and faithful stewards as we develop and use them. If we will look to God, he will help us use and develop our great potential. 

 Prayer: Help me to have self-discipline and control over self-defeat and negative thinking.
