You don’t die of a broken heart, you only wish you did. Marilyn Peterson
Heartache is a non-physical type pain that resides in our inner being, our psyche. It is not caused by cuts, bruises, broken bones, sprains or other such things. It is pain that is causes by things and issues that have weakened or bruised our ego, personhood; our sense of self. While physical pain tends to be localized and identifiable. Heartache is a pain that pervades us and affects our ability to function.
We can often deal with physical pain, bear it, block it out, and carry on somewhat normally. When we let our guard down or lose our focus, it may return to get our attention, but we are often able to put it on the back burner and function at close to normal. The pain that comes from heartache is often a different matter; it can handicap us in ways that prevents us from functioning at anything close to normal. It can take away our mental and physical energy, our vitality and our will to live. It may lead to degrees of depression that require medical and psychological treatment. If we have not personally suffered from the pain of heartache we have friends and loved ones who have. Nothing we can say or do is much help in encouraging those who suffer from extreme heartache.
Events that cause heartache or other forms of mentally and emotional pain are often associated with the trials and tribulations of life. Heartache and related ailments come from life’s adversities as they confront us at various times during life. Such events have happened and will happen to all of us. It is part of life to be required to confront these challenges, overcome them and to move on. It is our seasoning and life’s experiences that increasingly provides the tools, knowledge and wisdom necessary to put life back in its place; to learn from adversity and to continue on. It is something each of us much learn to deal with on our own. It is not something that someone can do for us. It is a part of our maturation and growth. The more we look to or live in the past, the more heartache may control us. The more we have something to live for, to look forward to, the more faith and confidence we acquire; the more we gain the strength to overcome the effects of heartache and carry on.
Challenge:You are controlled by your inner spirit. It functions based on whatever you allow to influence you and make you who you are. You will always be a work in progress; growing, adapting, learning and gaining through the fruits of your experiences and acquired wisdom.Whatever causes pain, either physical or mental, should not defeat you. It is up to you how you choose to deal with it. Put life’s pain in proper perspective.
Wisdom: Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken. Albert Camus
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Isaiah 40:29
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
How we handle the trials and tribulations of life is largely a function of attitude and spirit. If we are pessimistic and dwell on our problems they will have much more power over us. If we are more optimistic and are seeking to get through our problems we will grow through them and move on. If we allow God to inspire and to encourage us, our problems will make us stronger. We will increasingly have the ability to triumph over life.
Prayer: Help me to be able to look to you to get the strength and the courage to take on life’s challenges.
