Abilities

Capabilities, talents, skills and aptitudes

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. Theodore Roosevelt

Natural abilities are like natural plants; they need pruning by study. Frances Bacon

As we advance in life, we learn the limits of our abilities. James Anthony Frode

It is a general conclusion that each of us is born with our fair share of natural ability. This raw material provides the foundation for being relatively competent at one or more occupations or interests. Having an ability means we are capable of being particularly good at something.

If we knew this special talent and fully developed it, we may well achieve excellence at it. Whether this happens to be a profession or even a hobby we may well become very accomplished. We have in us what it takes to become lawyers, doctors, statesmen, artisans, craftsmen, athletes, enablers, nurtures, or some other calling. A “calling” represents pre-programmed innate abilities to be rather adept at doing certain things.

It is believed that callings are like beacons directing us to use our special talents for which we are well suited. Some believe we cannot find real happiness unless we satisfy these deep longings. Some definitions of success state that “your work must become your play” or “success is getting paid for something you would do for free.” Ideally, “work and play’ become the same. We consider getting paid for that which we love doing as something to be envied. Few are fortunate enough to accomplish this. Preachers are said to be called, debaters should become lawyers, and people good with their hands should become craftsmen and artisans.

We have abilities longing to be cultivated; our urges and longings need to be acknowledged. They may never, go way until we give them some form of expression.  We may try to subdue them, hide and ignore them; however, chances are that they will never disappear until we allow them to be developed. Some have matched these longings with their professions, while others have developed hobbies or other activities that provide an avenue for their innate abilities to find expression.

We may be swimming against the current; trying to do something for which we are unsuited. Perhaps there is need to add something new or to make some modifications. A new job, hobby or special interest may give our lives a “shot in the arm” and allow us to swim with the current. Until we identify, acknowledge and provide opportunity for our true abilities to blossom; we may never be the person we can become. We have within us seeds that want to sprout, grow, and develop our true talents and abilities.

.

Challenge: Have you developed your potential? You may have abilities and talents that are dormant and undeveloped. Chances are you may know this. These inner urgings require your response; until you do, you may never have true peace and contentment. Spend time thinking and contemplating on this. Consider making some changes or adding something new. Do something good for you. Find out what it is that may be calling you.

Wisdom: We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Spiritual: (NIV)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Ps 32:8

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6

There is a spiritual urge or calling with us. It is the compass setting that is trying to point us toward God. If we ignore it and try to totally go our own way, we will always be off course. When we acknowledge it and align our life’s direction toward God, it leads us down a much better path. As we go down this path, we will find new energy and answers we have been looking for. We will have the new found confidence we have always needed.

Prayer: Help me to develop the talents and abilities you have blessed me with. Help me to glorify you.
