Adversity

Events, hardships and circumstances that disrupt life and cause difficulties; even pain and suffering

Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.  Seneca

One of the secrets of life is making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks. Jack Penn

Adversity? It’s a tonic, not a stumbling block! Every adversity carries the seen of an equal or greater benefit.  Napoleon Hill

Adversity is as much a part of life as eating and breathing. We tend to think of ourselves as victims when we face our adversities. Many great philosophers and writers have told us that adversity is basic to our maturation and development. It tests our mettle and strengthens our resolve. It teaches us such things as patience, determination, strength of character, confidence, and so much more.

Without our trials and tribulations we would never stretch, grow and mature. Life’s struggles can be like tornados that strike without warning; wreaking havoc, leaving behind a path of destruction and disappearing. They leave our life upside down. It falls upon us to pick up the pieces and rebuild. Adversity typically, leaves us weakened and vulnerable. It sometimes seems that the task of rebuilding our life is greater than our capabilities.

Somehow, we find ways to get our lives going again. It may require that we focus on bare essentials; food, shelter, and clothing. We start with the very basics and then move forward. Eventually, we can look back and realize that we have survived. Each time we experience adversity, we grow a little stronger and a little wiser. We get stretched, expanded, and become more mature. Our capabilities grow. We become more seasoned and experienced. Adversities are mandatory testing for everyone. We survive them and move on to the next exam. Not only are they required learning, but we must have some mastery of them in order to graduate with honors.

When adversity leaves us down and damaged, we must have the resolve that compels us to get up and move on. We must see through hardships and storm clouds to the sunshine that waits on the other side. We must look forward instead of in our rear view mirror in order to continue down life’s highway. There is little to be gained by remaining where we have been, we must push forward. Better days and worthy destinations wait for us.

We will have adversity. It cannot be avoided. It is always waiting for us. We can choose to have the mindset of helpless victims or we can be proactive, pick ourselves up, learn and go forward. When we get knocked off the horse, the best thing to do is get back on. By putting adversity in a proper perspective, it will lose some of its sting when it decides to visit us.

Challenge:  How do you handle adversity? Recall a recent adversity? Can you put it in perspective? Are you handling it, okay? Are you suffering as a victim or coping, regrouping and moving on. You can do this. Do not allow yourself to wallow in misery. You need your best effort. Feeling sorry for yourself is not helping. Look up and forward, not down or backwards. Enable and empower yourself. Better things and better days lie ahead.

Wisdom: Nature deals us her cruelest blows when she desires us to grow. Once we see the logic of this, we never again will quit in the face of adversity.  U. S. Anderson

Spiritual: (NIV)

Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.  James 1:3, 4

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.  Philippians 4:13

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

God created us with great capacity and potential. Life is preparing us for something much greater. Our earthly life is like a seed. We are sown, grown and hopefully matured; then transformed into a higher life form. It will be far greater than anything we can comprehend. We can triumph over trials and tribulations by allowing God to teach us and guide us through all our tests of life. This is all a part of the necessary growing that we must do.

Prayer:  Help me to have the strength, courage and faith to live and learn through the adversities of my life.
