Goals are absolutely essential, for goals give meaning to life. Victor Frankl
In great attempts it is glorious even to fail. Vince Lombardi
It is better to aim at perfection and miss, than to aim at imperfection and hit it. Thomas Watson
We often find ourselves settling for less than we should; finding this more preferable to how we feel when we fall short of reaching our expectations. By expecting less, we are more likely to meet our expectations and do not have to deal with disappointment or a sense of failure. Actually, we already failed when we set our sights too low. The adage about shooting for the moon advocates setting higher goals. Even though we may fall short we are better falling short on great goals than achieving goals that are too easy. We need to stretch in order to grow.
A primary idea behind personal growth and development is an ongoing commitment to having higher expectations. Where we plan on being tomorrow should be a little further along than where we are today or where we were yesterday. This is incremental growth. Even though we may not make as much progress as is possible, we grow and become a better person day by day. As long as there is progress, the rate of our progress is secondary to the fact that we are incrementally growing. As long as we set our sights a little high we make some progress. As we progress we continually reset our goals and aim even higher. We are continually raising our expectations. The long distance archer must aim the arrow very high in height in order for it to descend enough to hit the intended target. They purposely always aim high in order to hit the goal they seek.
Aiming high requires courage and confidence. It requires a commitment to having high expectations. We will never become the perfect person we may seek to become, but it is our quest to never quit trying or to accept too little of ourselves. The feeling of accomplishment and assurance that comes from looking back and seeing personal growth will provide us increased energy to keep trying, focusing and committing to aiming even higher.
The alternative to aiming high is to accept status quo and to stay imprisoned in our comfort zone. We waste time and energy staying stationary, stagnant and complacent. This includes dealing with the frustration, depression and unhappiness that are caused by accepting what we know to be unacceptable. Personal growth and development is the reward we will realize for adjusting our sights and always aiming just a little higher.
Challenge: What are your sights set? Do you set goals that test you and require growth? Are you motivated by personal growth and development? The idea is to get better. Keep setting your sights and expectations higher. Once you get close to your bar, set your goals even higher. Goals should never be quite within reach. You will not try as hard when you know you can reach the bar. You cannot reach your potential without stretching.
Wisdom: It concerns us to know the purposes we seek in life, for then, like archers aiming at a definite mark, we shall be more likely to attain what we want. Aristotle
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
But The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness. Ecclesiastes 2:26
For those choosing to walk with God, his Holy Spirit will encourage and enable us to start raising our standards, goals, motivation, self-discipline and other such things. Once we start listening to what God has to say to us, we will not be complacent and satisfied to stay inside our comfort zones. We will have an inner drive and a new found energy that causes us to start expecting more of ourselves, to aim higher and to become a better person.
Prayer: Help me to never be content until I have become the person you want me to be.
