Attitude Adjustment

Making an adjustment to the way we think or act.

The last of human freedoms is to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.  Victor Frankl

Human beings can alter their lives by altering the attitudes of the mind. William James

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character. Albert Einstein

Attitude adjustments are something everyone needs on a regular basis. Our attitude is like the carburetor in our car or the thermostat in our cooling system. If we do not operating properly, our engine runs poorly, or our car overheats and we lose our cool. Our attitude is an internal control that helps us to keep focused and oriented. With a proper attitude we can be remarkably efficient in our activities and our efforts; and we can have harmonious relationships with those around us. It is important that we keep our attitude in tip top condition.

Some of us have a very hard time keeping a good handle on our attitude. It can be too sensitive and fragile and get knocked out of off balance at the slightest bump. When this happens we can get sour, lose control of our temper; get down in the dumps, and all but fall apart. We can be like puppets on a string; at the mercy of what others say or do. We do not have control of our attitude.

A sign of maturity and a highly desirable quality is to be able to not only maintain a well-tuned attitude, but to be sensitive to those times when it needs adjusting. It is one thing to be a person who has learned to develop a well-adjusted attitude; it is yet another task to be sensitive to those times when it needs adjusting. No matter how well-controlled we may be, there are times when we get out of whack and need re-calibrating. Ideally, we should be like a high quality thermostat that senses and adjusts for changes in our attitude.

Those who maintain their attitude face life’s challenges with a type of efficiency that is to be admired. This is something we should all seek to master. A good starting point to building a good quality attitude is to be sensitive and conscious of how we think and react to all that happens to us. We need to be aware when we start slipping. Alarms need to sound and alert us to adjust our attitudinal controls. Being able to regroup and realign how we are thinking helps us to stay on top of things. If we ignore our alarms or turn them off, we can lose control and suffer the consequences. Maintaining and keeping a good attitude should be a very high priority.

Challenge: Your attitude needs tuning on a regular basis. Maintaining it should be very high priority. It makes a tremendous and positive difference to your life. Do you easily allow it to slip or turn sour? Be on alert to monitoring it continuously and adjusting it on a regular basis. If needed, stop what you are doing, remove yourself, take a break; do whatever it takes to fix it. Maintain your positive and good attitude at all costs.

Wisdom: If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. Marcus Aurelius

Spiritual: (NIV)

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. 2 Tim 1:7

The attitude we have determines much as to what happens to us throughout our lives. Those who are driven by a losing attitude will exemplify lives that are undesirable, ineffective, and disappointing. Having a good attitude is fundamental to successful living. Those that are on top of the world have developed a winning attitude. Those who walk with the Lord have an attitude that is resilient and stands above all the trials and tribulations of life.

Prayer: Help me to be a good witness and a good example by having an attitude that spreads love and joy.
