Wisdom

Ability to make good judgments, common sense, having intelligence and experience.

The more I know, the more I realize I don’t know…  Albert Einstein

Many men can utter words of wisdom; few men can practice it themselves… Hittopadesa

The fruit of wisdom is peace. Chinese Proverb

The combination of intelligence and all that we learn through experience mix together to give us wisdom. Generally, wisdom comes as we get older. Those who are wise are likely freer and less burdened by the trials and tribulations of life. Through the acquisition of wisdom there is a better chance of joy and happiness in life.

A wonderful example of the application of wisdom relates to a story about King Solomon. He was asked to make judgment concerning two women who claimed to be the mother of the same baby. Neither of the women would concede. He finally decreed that the solution to the problem was to cut the baby in two and give half to each of them. The woman who decided to give up the baby to the other rather than have him killed, provided King Solomon the answer as to which one was the real mother.

Wisdom is something we should seek. Some are more adept at acquiring wisdom than others. Everyone should gain some wisdom as they get older. We should get better about making decisions and making fewer mistakes. In order to become wiser we should be proactively seeking knowledge and experience. We should be learning, doing and accomplishing. Wisdom is similar to our muscles: in order to become stronger we must use them. In order to become wiser we should be using the wisdom we have to gain more wisdom. It is a continuous improvement process. It could be said that the more wisdom we have the more we will master life.

A distinguishing characteristic of wisdom is it gives us the ability to know what things in life are more important than others. Family, friends, love, joy, peace, and happiness are more important than the acquisition of material possessions. Doing what you love indicates more wisdom than being a slave to a job that you hate. Being able to rise above self and having a desire to do things for others are fruits of wisdom. Those that live their lives based on principles and values are wiser and tend to be happier than those who do not. As we gain wisdom we are able to free ourselves from undesirable outside and external influences and are able to live and direct ourselves from inside out. It is wisdom that gives us the strength and the knowledge to do these things.

Challenge: Open your eyes, heart, and mind. Seek to learn and understand. Commit to personal growth and development. Live life instead of avoiding it. Seek Wisdom. Determine what you believe in and stand for? Commit to your principles and values. Be a captain rather than a passenger. Become a victor, not a victim. Become the best you. Grow in wisdom. You will get more out of life, including more joy and happiness.

Wisdom: Knowledge is power, but only wisdom is liberty. Will Durant

Spiritual: (NIV)

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  James 1:5

To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.  Ecclesiastes 2:26

Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.  Psalm 51:6

True wisdom without knowledge of God is an oxymoron. The more we seek wisdom, the more likely we are to see the face and hands of God at work. The earth is like a garden. Each of us is a seed. God desires that each of us bear fruit and help make this world a better place. We are our own gardener and he is the Master Gardener. Each of us is responsible for caring for our own garden. He will help insure that we have a beautiful garden.

Prayer: Grant me wisdom and understanding and help me to be what you would have me be.
