Can

An attitude indicating self-auurance and confidence; a willingness to believe in one’s self.

If you believe you can, you probably can. If you believe you won’t, you most assuredly won’t. Belief is the ignition switch that gets you off the launching pad. Denis Waitley

“Do, or do not. There is no try. Yoda

Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. Lou Holtz   The concept behind “can” exemplifies belief, ability, capability, skill and power. When discussing the capabilities of a machine, it is straight forward. It has been designed and made capable of performing various functions. It can do things. A machine “being inanimate” does not have to deal with its attitude and beliefs to determine whether or not it is capable. It either can or it cannot, strictly based upon what its capabilities are. You turn it on and it performs its function as it was designed and it is done.

Humans are a “horse of a different color”. There are two elements to the concept of the human “can”. There are our basic capabilities. These are abilities we are born with and skills we learn that exemplifies our potentialities. Then there is the mental component. We can be potentially capable of performing a particular activity while being unable to physically accomplish it. This sounds contradictory on the surface. It we do not believe we are capable, even though, we are capable; it is the same net result as if we are innately incapable.

We must have the innate capability as well as the mental belief that we can. It requires both! On the contrary, if we are incapable; then we will be unable, even if we “think” we can. Let us concentrate on the mental side of this equation. We are innately capable of doing many things. However, much of our potential lies dormant and is literally going to waste, because of our mental deficiencies. We do not believe that we can do many things that we are actually quite capable of doing. We are not totally utilizing our potential. Why is this so? Some of us grasp the mental side of the word “can” and “we can”. Some of us handicap ourselves because we have difficulty in embracing the concept of “can”.  Things such as comfort zones, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, limiting beliefs, complacency and lack of drive and ambition hamper us and even imprison us.

The concept of “can” is greatly enhanced and empowered by being motivated and inspired and finally by taking action. Even a machine cannot accomplish its task if it is never “turned on”. We should all remember the “Little Engine That Could”, “I think I can, I think I can”, and of course he did. We should follow his example.

Challenge:  Are you hampered by a lack of thinking, “I can”. Do you fall short of what you could do because of not engaging the concept of “can”? Become more aware of the many opportunities that challenge you to do and accomplish. Increasingly, make yourself think, “I can”. You will not always succeed, but you will have more successes. Success breeds success. The more you think, “I can” the more you can! It’s really a “no brainer”.

Wisdom: Believe it can be done. When you believe something can be done, really believe, your mind will find the ways to do it. Believing a solution paves the way to solution. David Schwartz

Spiritual: (NIV)

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.  Philippians 4:13

God has made us in his image. We are capable of great things. He made us to live life successfully and joyously. Our capabilities and potentialities will never be realized until we tap into God’s power. Without his love and power empowering us, we are very limited in what we will do and what we will accomplish. If we only knew what we are truly capable of, we would do so much more. God can and will help us, assure us, and empower us.

Prayer:  Help me to live up to my potential. Help me to be everything you designed me to be!
