Accept the challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory. General George S Patton
You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration. James Allen
Good is not good where better is expected. Thomas Fuller
Chances are that we have the ability to excel at something. Some of us are able to excel with minimal effort; while others are required to make a serious commitment to something in order to excel at it. Some of us have our priorities mixed up; we are excelling at the unimportant things and not excelling at the more important things.
We all need to feel that we are really good at something. Our self concept constantly absorbs feedback and processes how we feel about ourselves. When we fail to perform to our expectations our self esteem falls. When we do perform admirably or even excel, our self image is enhanced. Performing well increases our well being, performing poorly lowers it. When we expect to do well we will tend to do better. If we expect to do poorly, we will usually do as we expected. The ability to excel combines hereditary and environmental influences; and the combination of a strong will, burning desire, work ethic and expectations of doing well. We expected to.
Excellence is an attitude of mind. People excel because that expect themselves to excel. They have a mindset to excel. A good image of having this mindset is a U.S. Marine. They are taught to expect excellence from themselves. We would all do well to follow their example. We get out of things to the degree of what our expectations were at going into something. People tend to be motivated to excel for different reasons; some out of high expectations; while others may be seeking the praise or approval of others. They wanted to excel.
Ideally, we seek to excel out of our own self discipline and motivation, high expectations, and a desire to be the best that we can be. When we excel at something, it means we have given the best we have and hold ourselves accountable to doing so. Excellence means taking ownership, signing our signature to it and putting our very soul into it. Excellence happens as a result of doing the kinds of things that result in our very best efforts. Mediocrity or worse comes from less than our best. We should seek to excel in those arenas of our lives that are the most important to us, spiritual, family, health, career and others. Remember that excellence comes largely from our attitudes and expectations more than anything else.
Challenge: What do you excel at? What do have a passion for? Why are you able to do so well in some things? The reasons that you do well at some things can be used to help you to excel at other things. Where in your life do you need to perform at higher level? Change your approach and your expectations. Turn on the desire and the effort, commit, persevere, and give it your best. Excellence is mostly a matter of attitude than a result.
Wisdom: If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude. Colin Powell
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness. Ecclesiastes 2:26
Excellence is something mankind seeks in trying to be his best. We are capable at being excellent in many aspects of our life. Whatever we try to achieve in our own strength we will be limited. When we seek excellence and have God helping us in our efforts, we will do so much better. We were design to have God as a part of our life. Without God we are incomplete. We can never be all we can be as long as God is not part of who we are.
Prayer: Help me to use the day in a way that pleases you! Help me to become what you want me to be.
