Limiting Beliefs

Dead EndSelf-concept, mental images limiting and binding us, irrational fears, comfort zones

Your behavior is truly a reflection of what you believe. Hyrum W. Smith

A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind – Elly Roselle

All personal breakthroughs began with a change in beliefs. Anthony Robbins

If we could see ourselves objectively we would see how bound and controlled we are. The barriers, fences, obstacles, lies, fears and the mental limits defining and controlling us would become visible. Limiting beliefs minimize and restrict our efforts to experience new things and to grow and advance. We use so little of our true potential. Self-limiting beliefs prevent this from happening.

We are our own worst enemy. Our present lot in life is mostly due to choices we have made. This is true because we falsely believe we are not capable of doing more. We are bound by many various limits. We can go only as far as our self-imposed boundaries and low expectations. It we were not self-limiting, we would be doing, accomplishing and experiencing more. A good analogy is the fear of a young child jumping into a swimming pool for the first time. They are facing something new and instinctively fear the unknown. Even though someone is there to keep them safe and secure, their limiting beliefs prevents them jumping in. Life always challenges us to overcome fears and mental barriers. When captive elephants are young they are tied to a stake driven into the ground. They learn to be bounded and limited by the stake. Adult elephants continue to be bound by the false power of the stake. The stake is a limiting belief. It has only imaginary power. If the elephant only tried, it could easily free itself from the stake’s false power.

We achieve a fraction of our true potential because of self-limiting beliefs. It is easy to blame parents, environment, society, bad breaks and other things as binding stakes. These things are false barriers and create limiting beliefs. The truth is we are bound mostly by imaginary boundaries. Excuses and weak reasoning are meant to make us feel better about ourselves. We have what it takes to break free from imaginary barriers. We can choose to be free to roam, explore and experience new things. If wish to make any substantial progress in our lives, we must learn to overcome our limiting beliefs as we encounter them. We must imagine, believe and see ourselves overcoming limiting boundaries and fears. To overcome limiting beliefs we must start pulling up the many flimsy stakes binding us. We become free by using our minds to break free from self-imposed boundaries.

Challenge: The world, in which you live, is the world you have created. It is the reality you envision. It is the cumulative results of upbringing, environment, expectations, and last but not least your personalized limiting beliefs. It is not likely to change very much unless you are willing to break free. You are only bound by the limitations you place on yourself. You only have limiting beliefs because you are choosing to have them

Wisdom: What you believe is what you achieve. You become what you affirm: positively affirm your greatness, genius and fullest potential.  Mark Victor Hansen

Spiritual: (NIV)

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

The Bible says we have not because we ask not. We do not ask because we do not believe.  We do not believe because we lack faith. We lack faith because we are unwilling to step out and step forward. We are unwilling to jump into the water. We must affirm we believe that God is there and that he will catch us. He is our Heavenly Father and is there to protect us and watch over us. There is no reason to have the irrational fears that limit us.

Prayer: Help me to overcome my limiting beliefs. Help me to become what you designed me to be.
