The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work. Harry Golden
Sometimes it is time for damage control, going on defense, waiting for the storm to pass. Randall Burkhalter
We know that it is unwise to take things for granted. When we least expect it, life throws unexpected curveballs at us, our wheels come off or things just take a turn for the worse. In such times at this, we may need to change course from being on offense and change over to defense. We may have to temporarily change objectives from trying to go forward to minimizing being pushed backwards.
Those who have been around for a while know we go through cycles or stages, experience peaks and valleys, and have to endure bad times mixed in with the good times. It happens to all of us at some time or another. It requires going from a higher gear and gearing down to a lower gear. It requires focusing and deliberate and cautious maneuvering to get through tough times. It goes without saying, the tougher the circumstances; the more we may have to bear down and proceed with caution. We may even find ourselves on the edge of a precipice and have to be extremely careful to keep from going over the edge. We must concentrate on surviving the moment and waiting for the storm to clear, the crisis to end, or better days to come our way.
As we get older and more experienced; we should learn to better cope and endure through difficulties. It does not necessarily ever get any easier. We gain some advantage because we have experienced such things before and survived. We have learned how to focus and pay attention to the details and circumstances of the moment. The goal becomes to hold our ground and minimizing falling back any further than is necessary.
Storms come to an end. Recessions and economic downturns and other hardships will have had their time and eventually become a thing of the past. Blue skies and sunshine have always replaced the storm clouds. Better days, better times, and new opportunities wait in the wings as tough times start receding.
Determination, patience, perseverance, motivation, self-confidence, discipline, will power, faith, strength of character and a strong work ethic are but some of the traits and skills that help us to change over from being on defense and survival mode to going forward, advancing and succeeding. Being able to engage in damage control when necessary helps to minimize our damages and prepares us for better times when they eventually return.
Challenge: Sometimes life requires you to concentrate on the moment rather than on planning ahead for tomorrow or next week. It may be wise to reduce expenses, put off major expenditures and avoid unnecessary risks. When tough times come your way, it requires slowing down, taking precautions, and moving very cautiously. Minimize your risk. It is always good to be able to survive life’s storms to live and fight another day.
Wisdom: Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength. Gandhi
We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful, gentleness and self control. Galatians 5:22, 23
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8
Trials and tribulations, adversity and tough times are an integral part of our life’s experience. Depending upon what we are made of, our ability to withstand, endure, and succeed hang in the balance. Two options we have is taking on life only in our own strength or allowing God to fine tune our efforts and teach us a better way. Our strength is limited. We are never limited when God is on the sidelines coaching us. We are incomplete with him.
Prayer: Help me to overcome my fears, doubts, and lack of faith. Help me to draw upon your strength.
