Tranquility is a state of mind. Few achieve it. Some go to great lengths to find it. It is not something we find. It is created and achieved and more an attitude of mental discipline than something we find by searching for it.
To be free from stress and strain is not easily done. The “grind” and pressures of daily living apply to everyone. Life is fast; demanding, disappointing, frustrating, and full of “bumps and bruises”. It is like a giant roller coaster that will not let us off after the initial thrill is gone. It keeps on going, wearing us down physically and mentally. We know all this pressure is bad for us, but we have problems escaping from it.
In a sense, to achieve “tranquility”, we have to “escape” from this world. An example may be those who buy a cabin in the woods to get away. Henry D. Thoreau wrote about escaping to the woods around Walden Pond to escape daily life back in the early 1800’s. Many have attempted to find tranquility by relocating themselves to different circumstances. Some do this physically, others try the mental approach.
Through mental self-discipline, we can learn to largely control our emotions and responses. We can control our mental and physical reactions rather than letting our “subconscious” dominate us. Choosing how to respond to stress and strain is more desirable. Learning to be “cool, calm and collected” adds to the quality of our life. It requires an attitude of tranquility and freedom from being pressured. Letting some things go, and “not sweating small things” are skills we can learn to develop. When people are rude, we have to maintain composure and avoid getting upset. Traffic jams and bad drivers cannot allow us to lose our “cool”. When negative things confront us, we learn to maintain proper perspectives.
These things require us to exercise conscious control. We choose how we allow Life to affect us. We have a menu of life style choices. Living life with “peace and tranquility” is something we can choose over “rat race”, “a mile a minute”, “keeping up with the Jones” and so many more. We can choose to have peace of mind and freedom from stress and strain. A tranquil life style is possible. We may even find joy and happiness as the desert that also get included when we choose a life of tranquility.
Challenge: On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you score yourself on tranquility? If you score low, are you looking to find tranquility? It requires “baby steps” and “eating the elephant one bite at a time”. Avoid reacting automatically, both mentally and physically. Take control of your responses. Avoid losing your “cool” especially over things you have no control. Build on one success at a time. Choose the “higher road”. Be cool.

Life is giant emotional roller coast that often goes too fast to be fun. It is non-stop and jerks us up and down and around at very high speeds. It will not let us off and makes us stay on board. We may be more of a prisoner than a passenger. It does not have to be this way. God wants us to have mastery over the world rather than being slave to it. We cannot do this in our own strength. If we will reach out to him He will give us the strength we need.
Prayer: Help me to have the strength to live life as it should be lived; to be free rather than as a slave to it.
