The Rollercoaster

Train TracksThe uncertainties of life; sometimes up, sometimes down, twists and turns, not knowing what lies around the next bend, the good and the bad; the challenges, the unknown.

Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today. James Dean

Life is a roller coaster; you have your ups and downs unless you fall off. Author Unknown

If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress. Barack Obama

Let us compare Life to riding The Big Roller Coaster. It is can be the greatest of thrills. It has bigger ups and greater downs; more twists and sharper turns. Sometimes we feel great exhilaration and sometimes we greatly fear the next big dip or crazy turn. Sometimes we want to get off, take a break and just catch our breath.

If we are not willing to ride the rollercoaster, we likely miss out on much of life’s richness and fullness; and become much less of the person we otherwise might have been. If we complacently go through life; we miss its diversity of experiences and will have missed much. Life consists of different stages and degrees of roller coasters; starting with the toddler version; going round and round in tranquil and repetitive circles. Roller coasters tend to continue to step up, adding more speed, twists and turns, ups and downs and more thrills, excitement and adventure. As we step up, bigger challenges and the thrill of the experience continues to increase.

The Big Roller Coaster is the supreme challenge, for big boys and girls; those wanting more from life. If we never get the courage and commitment to get on, we miss something very important in learning how best to overcome our complacencies, fears, anxieties; all those things that hold us back. We will never develop all our potential. Never stepping forward and leaving the safety and security of our comfort zone, we miss out on some of life’s greatest adventures. There are things we must experience firsthand; things we cannot learn or experience from others, things we cannot read about or watch from afar. Without the courage and conviction to give such things a whirl, we are shortchanging ourselves on what we could have seen and done.

As we decide whether such a reward is worth the risk, we can learn from those who gave it a ride. Very seldom are there casualties. The chances of dying from the experience are virtually nil. We will very likely survive the experience. As a result, we will learn to have more faith, believe in ourselves and have the courage to face even more challenges. Those getting the most from life do put life to the test and this does include taking some risks. To get more out of life, we need to put more proactive effort into it.

Challenge: Life teaches you get out of it in direct proportion to what you put into it. There is no shortcutting this natural law. Fear, anxiety, complacency, hiding in your comfort zone; all prevent you from experiencing some of the thrills and adventures that await you. Sometimes you must be willing to jump in and get your feet wet; pay the price of admission and jump in. Have faith and confidence in yourself. No pain no gain.

Wisdom: Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it. Bill Cosby

Spiritual: (NIV)

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  Proverbs 3:5

If we never go to the amusement park, we will miss the variety of thrills and experiences that amusement parks offer. The reason we go there is just for that reason, the experiences. If we never step forward and experience the richness of life, we will miss out on many great experiences. Things that teach us, expand us, and develop us into something more. Why should we fear such things, especially when we have God watching over us?

Prayer: Help me to remember that I have nothing to fear as long as I am in your loving care.
