Happiness involves the full use of one’s power and talents. John Gardner
Put your talent into your work, but your genius into your life. Oscar Wilde
Every human has four endowments- self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom… The power to choose, to respond, to change. Steven Covey
Most of us have some skills or abilities at which we are very good or excellent. They are our special talents. We have a tendency to lean toward or be compelled to develop them. Many go on to develop these talents to the degree that it becomes their profession or their passion. Sometimes pursuing and developing one’s innate talents goes hand in hand with finding happiness and joy and even helps to fill life with more meaning and purpose.
Artists, musicians, actors, lawyers, politicians, and others are likely talented in ways that led them to pursue careers that naturally cultivated and tapped their natural abilities. These are obvious examples of those whose talents were realized, developed, and pursued. Many of us have talents and abilities that are not being utilized, much less developed. We hide and suppress our talents. We keep them locked up deep within us because we are afraid of letting them out of the bag. Doubts, fears, and limiting beliefs prevent us from acknowledging them, much less pursuing them. The truth is that we may have a yearning inside of us that is going unanswered.
It is likely that some of us were never encouraged to develop and pursue our talents. Some of us are finding ourselves where time, obligations and life’s circumstances prevent us from pursuing and developing our skills. Some lack the initiative, commitment and courage to put their abilities to good use. We may be entirely too comfortable hiding inside the confines of our comfort zones.
The truth is that we may have something bottled up inside that is wanting out. It is something that we were born with and is meant to be a part of what and who we are. It is something that could lead us to be happier and more complete. It could be considered to be a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle that defines us. As we go through life attempting to become a completed “us”, we cannot be complete without all puzzle pieces in their proper place. This missing piece may be just what we need to finish putting it all together; enabling us to utilize our full potential. It may be like turning on a switch that causes all of the lights, bells, whistles, gismos and gadgets inside us to purr, whir, spin, hum and operate like the well-designed precision instrument we are intended to be.
Challenge: Are you keeping your skills and talents locked up? Are you trying to ignore the yearning that may be gnawing at you? Why not answer this special calling? You are preventing yourself back from becoming the “complete” you. Bring those talents and abilities out of the closet. Embrace them and get to know them. It is very possible a vital part of the real you needs to find its place in your life. Become what you were intended to be.
Wisdom: All of us do not have equal talents, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talents. John F Kennedy
God’s gifts and God’s call are under full warranty – never canceled, never rescinded. Romans 11:29
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
We are born with talents and abilities that God gives us. We are called to use these gifts. In our own strength we can only go so far, but with the Holy Spirit in our lives we can develop these gifts and increasingly become what we are designed to be. This is the path that increasingly leads us to joy and happiness. Without His power and strength we will fall short. Because of free will, it is our choice as to what we do or do not do with our lives.
Prayer: Help me to use the talents and abilities you have given me to honor and praise you.
