Good Deeds

100_1578Acts of kindness and goodness without expectations of anything in return

We are the children of our own deeds. Victor Hugo

Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. Plato

Live in the present. Do the things that need to be done. Do all the good you can each day. The future will unfold.  Peace Pilgrim

Boy Scouts are known for doing good deeds. The classic portrayal is the scout who helps an elderly lady across the street. Doing good deeds is something that is very good for us. Even though we should not have expectations of anything in return, the truth is that we benefit enormously. Good deeds are good for our well-being.

Whenever we do something for someone else, it is like a potent, life-giving vitamin. If we could measure who benefits the most; the person being helped or the person doing the helping; the person doing the helping benefits the most. We are feeding ourselves a powerful tonic that helps us to overcome some of our ills and difficulties. We can remember the feelings of joy we had when we did something good and kind for someone else. It made us feel good.

We would have a much better world if each of us committed a little bit of time and effort in doing things for others. What wonderful examples we set for those around us when we give something of ourselves. There are many wonderful organizations that exist whose purpose is to use their resources to help those in need of help. We know in our hearts that this is something we should do. Even though basically, we are well-intentioned and well-meaning, there are numerous things that interfere and hinder our good intentions. We need to do better than our intentions.

We are too focused on our own problems and have some difficulty thinking about the needs of others. We have a problem with our motivation and self-discipline. We hide in our comfort zone. A poor self-image and self-concept makes us too selfish and causes us to be overly absorbed in solving our own difficulties. We are distracted from doing things for others because of being too uncomfortable with our own selves.

Doing things for others does wonderful things for us. We must use motivation and discipline, act and get outside our comfort zone and overcome selfishness and stop thinking about our own problems. This is a potent elixir that empowers us. People who do things for others tend to be happier and more joyful than those who do not. Some absolutely powerful self-help psychology is to spend less time on ourselves and spend more time in helping and doing things for others. It will do wonders for our own problems.

Challenge: The old adage that little things add up to be big things is very true. You have opportunities every day to do little things. Open your eyes, ears, heart and mind and be on the lookout for opportunities to do things for others. When some of these opportunities present themselves, be proactive. Be aware of the good feelings that occur as you do things to help someone have a better day. Be aware of how much it has helped your day as well.

Wisdom: Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can. John Wesley

Spiritual: (NIV)

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philipp. 4:7

Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.  Eph. 4:32

Sure goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6

The Golden Rule teaches we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. The Bible teaches we should love our neighbors. Love is a very powerful force. It overcomes negatives. It can and does overcome evil. It is hard to really understand the power of love and utilize it in our lives until we can learn to truly love. Our power to truly love will be minimal until we know the love of God in our lives and allow his love to live through us. It empowers.

Prayer: Help me to love myself as You love me and help me to love others because I have your love in my heart.
