Nothing can bring you happiness but yourself. Ralph W Emerson

People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be. Abraham Lincoln

The greatest part of our happiness depends on our dispositions, not our circumstances. Martha Washington

The search for “happiness” appeals to everyone. We all would love to find it. Many are looking. Few are finding. Are we looking mostly in the wrong places? What is happiness and where might we actually find it?

Happiness” is not something to be found. It really is not something that finds you, either. Determining to be happy is perhaps best described as a “decision”. Yes, “happiness” is mostly a decision we must make. It is not caused by outside circumstances, but comes from an internal mindset. Happiness is more like an attitude. It is not found by searching. Its realization and conception must happen and develop within.

Happiness is not to be found in things. Many look for it in the pursuit of money and wealth. The consensus is that wealth does not equal happiness. Many are sadly disappointed, disillusioned, and despondent after arriving at the pinnacle of worldly success only to find that happiness was not included in the package.

People search for happiness in relationships, hobbies, fads and anything and everything that comes along. Some believe they should have something to believe in and be able to get lost in. Is having a cause the pathway to happiness. What is there in such things that may provide us some answers to the pursuit of happiness?

A good definition of happiness might be: “loving your life for where it is, what it is and where it is going”. This happens by realizing we are capable of generating our own zestful energy for life. This zest comes from inside us. By developing the right attitudes within, we are motivated, empowered and energized. Such things as love, joy, happiness, successes and fulfillment are types of energy we can generate from within.

Happiness occurs when certain factors come together causing us to look at the world, our self, and life’s circumstances differently. It can be a conscious event or happen subconsciously. It may be a “light bulb”, fireworks, an “Aha moment” or gradual. It may be the result of attaining sufficient experience and wisdom.  Happiness can occur when we no longer allow outside circumstances to rule and govern us. An internal switch is “flipped” and we start living from the inside-out. We take control and determine to control rather than be controlled. We determine to live life on our own terms “above the fray”. This happens from the inside out.

Challenge: You have a sense of being either happy or unhappy. Chances are if you are happy, your inner self is in balance.  If unhappy, you probably realize that adjustments need to be made to your approach to life.  The question is, “Is this worth doing?” The answer is, “Your Happiness Is at Stake”. It requires a decision, a determination, and a commitment to overhaul from the inside out. You have everything to gain. Go ahead.

Wisdom: Rules for Happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for.” Immanuel Kant

Spiritual: (NIV)

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down.  Philippians 4:7

They that know God will be humble; they that know themselves cannot be proud

The quest to find happiness is something everyone can relate to, especially as we get older and wiser. Sadly, it seems that those who actually acquire a state of happiness seem to be few in number. It would seem that perhaps we do not understand it or know how to acquire it. The truth is that to really be happy involves a state of inner peace and well-being. We are unable to be truly at peace without having a right relationship with God.

Prayer: Help me to understand that happiness comes from within and from you.
