Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Winston Churchill
The only disability in life is a bad attitude. Scott Hamilton
Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same. Francesca Reigler
The mind is an electro-biological-chemical mass that creates our “humanness. It functions on both a conscious and a sub-conscious level. It activates when we are born and deactivates when the lights are turned off at death. It is like the Energizer Bunny. It is a dynamo of mental energy, performing many functions. One of its important duties is how it influences our basic attitudes about life.
Our minds are always functioning: thinking, talking, inspiring, praising, criticizing, doubting and even second-guessing. It is the “Oz” behind the curtain. Our mind can comfort and encourage us, or it can be detrimental, belittling and berating us. To fully develop our great potential we have to learn to encourage, train, and teach our minds to help us rather than to hurt us; to be our friend and not our adversary. It needs to constantly monitor and filter everything we are thinking or experiencing. Thoughts that are negative or pessimistic handicap us in so many ways. Negative thinking weakens our resolve and steals our great creative energy and potential.
We cannot afford to be our own worst enemy. There is already enough “negativism: in the world without us adding to the effort. Replacing negative thinking with positive thinking and a negative outlook with a positive outlook and attitude is one of the most important and fundamental tasks we have. It requires constant and diligent monitoring and policing everything that passes through our minds. Negative thoughts need to cause internal alarms and raise red flags; whatever it takes to get our conscious mind’s attention. We can learn to intercept negative thoughts; hold them, analyze them; decide if they have value or not; process them or discard them; and replace unacceptable thoughts with more acceptable and beneficial thoughts.
When engaged in writing, we have conscious control over what we write down. Anything we do not like, we can change or replace. Similarly, we have the ability to grade out unacceptable thoughts and replace them with thoughts we like. We need to replace undesirable and destructive thinking with desirable and constructive thinking. The better we can do this, the more successful we become in all aspects of life: relationships, careers, day to day living, and growth and development. We must realize that negative thinking is destructive. What we are thinking is what we are becoming. Our thoughts are our seeds; they tend to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Challenge: You must be aware of any tendencies you have to lean toward the negative. If you allow negative thinking to occupy your thoughts, and control your actions, you will lose much of your positive potential. One of the best things you can ever do is to learn to replace negative thinking and negative influences with positive ones. Hold yourself accountable. How you think about things greatly influences the results you will get.
Wisdom: The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes William James
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge, 2 Pt 1:5
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1
We are what we think about and become what we allow to influence us. Our results and accomplishments are greatly influenced by these factors. The world is a negative place and influences us in negative ways. Our choice is to be influenced by the world and its ways or by God and his positive and loving ways. If we want to develop our potential and become what we were designed to be; we should seek to be influenced and guided by God.
Prayer: Help me to control my thoughts and actions in ways that are pleasing and useful to you.
