High expectations are the key to everything. Sam Walton.

Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy. Brian Tracy

There is one thing which gives radiance to everything. It is the idea of something around the corner. G K Chesterton

One of the things that separate us from animals is the ability to think or to expect. We do not merely exist and instinctively react to various forms of stimuli; but we have the ability to plan or imagine. With clear and defined expectations, we can stay on course and methodically achieve and accomplish our various dreams and goals. It is as if we have an inner compass and a road map that continually updates and gives our life direction and purpose.
The less we approach life with expectations, the more we are vulnerable to what life is throwing at us. Those with little or no expectations achieve little and tend to become victims in our society. They are like the leaf which has no expectations and looks to the wind to take it from point A to point B. It does not know where it wants to go or what it wants to do. The more defined, visualized, and detailed our expectations are, the more successful we are in realizing them. Some well known adages apply: “You tend to get out of something what you put into it,” “You are what you think about,” “Shoot for the moon,” “Whatever the mind of man can conceive, can be achieved,” and many more. These are all examples of how expectations can become our reality. The more success we have turning expectations into reality; the better we becoming at repeating the process. Those we describe as achievers are those accomplished at really defining their expectations and converting them into reality. They are the doers.
It works like this: visualize something worthy of accomplishment; begin to have expectations of achieving it; create a strong mental and detailed image of successfully meeting this expectation; develop a plan of action that creates realistic steps for accomplishment; then start systematically and methodically working toward it. Success is all but guaranteed. This can be an innate process which works similar to a heat seeking missile. Once the process is begun, we are instinctively driven to accomplish. It is a very powerful force; if we can master it at even a marginal level, we can accomplish great things in our lives. Expectations coupled with imagination and visualization are extremely powerful. They are to be valued, treasured, nourished, and perfected. Expect much, achieve much! A great truism: Those with low expectations have little or no problems meeting their expectations.
Challenge: What expectations do you have of yourself? Are the high and lofty and worthy, or are they low and unworthy? How you answer this question tells much about where you are and where you are headed. Having expectations is interrelated with such concepts as standards, values, morals, meaning and purpose. It is a good time to review these things. Have clearly defined expectations. Set your compass and take on Life one step at a time.
Wisdom: If you paint in your mind a picture of bright and happy expectations, you put yourself into a condition conducive to your goal. Norman Vincent Peale

Spiritual: (NIV)
And this is my prayer; that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Philippians 1:9

This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:8

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Many teachers and philosophers have taught that Life pretty much delivers what we expect and ask. This is taught in many cultures and in many religions. It is a universal concept. God made us in his own image. We have some of his nature in our very core. We can choose to connect with God or ignore his existence and try to avoid Him. If we really want to maximize what Life has to offer us, we will always fall short until we ask and allow God to help us.

Prayer: Help me to live up to your expectations of me. Help me to live up to the expectations of myself.
