Bad News or Good News

A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition. William A Ward

We cannot make good news out of bad practice. Edward R Murrow

Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so. Shakespeare

We have a tendency to miss hearing the good news that is occurring all around us. Good things are happening without our even noticing or only barely noticing. If it is not sensational, catastrophic, ghastly, or does not involve bad deeds, criminal acts or death; it often does not get reported or we pay very little attention. We have more of an appetite for the negative than the positive and for bad news over good news. The media is providing us what we seek. Good news seems to be considered dull, boring, of little interest and demand.

We do complain about the news being mostly negative with very few good news stories. This is true for a reason. We are fed the type news we most want. The motive behind the news media is to make a profit. It exists to make money as it reports the news, be it television, newsprint, radio or internet. If we really wanted to hear the good and positive, the media would realize this and change their orientation of news from bad to good.

The psychology behind good news versus bad tells us much. There is a fine balance of living and existing in our comfort zones, feeling relatively well about ourselves, and thinking we have it good or better than most. Our emotional balance is relatively fragile. Whatever our self-image has evolved to be, we protect and justify it by reasons and excuses why we are where we are in life. We are forced to live with ourselves. Living in our comfort zones and surrounded by a world of negatives helps to more easily accept ourselves as okay.

Negatives influences bring us down, positives lift us up. The more we engage the negative side, the more we lower our expectations. What we do and whatever we accomplish is very dependent on our expectations and attitude. Anything lowering expectations and lessening attitude, works to hold us back.

If we can see and experience more of the good things happening all around, we will raise our expectations and attitude and experience more good for ourselves. By replacing negatives, be it news or anything else, with positives, we start changing our psyche and self-image to be better. More good news is like eating better and exercising more. We are what we eat, see, do and think. We need more positives. Look for and find the good.

Challenge: The difference between success, failure and mediocrity can be very small. This applies to material success, but even more so to having a good and healthy self image. You are responsible for your lot in life, your self-image, and what you do going forward. Everything that happens, how you perceive it, and how you allow it to influence you, impacts you. Improve your environment and your influences and you will get better results.

Wisdom: Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is. Anne Frank

Spiritual: (NIV)

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

The very best good news to hear, believe and process is that God is our heavenly father, He loves us, and wants only what any good parent would want for their children. Those knowing this and applying it to their lives, have an infinitely higher quality of life than those not knowing this or failing to understand it. This is absolutely the biggest life’s difference maker there is. Having a personal relationship with Him does make all the difference.

Prayer: Help me to hear and to understand your Good News and to live my life accordingly.
