Progress

082Moving forward, advancing, getting better, making changes, not complacent, stationary or status quo

Invention breeds invention.   Ralph Waldo Emerson

Not to go back, is somewhat to advance.  Alexander Pope

All progress has resulted from people who took unpopular positions.  Adlai Stevenson

Progress? We have three choices: we can go forward, stay the same, or go backward. We need to be committed to mostly proceeding in the forward direction. As we go forward there are two more types of progress; there is external and there is internal progress.

Let us discuss the idea of internal progress. Progress means to make change for the better. This has to take place from within us. It must happen from the inside out. It requires becoming objective and dealing with ourselves as if we are an outsider looking at and observing ourselves. It requires becoming our own teacher, counselor, coach and advisor. We really need to know our weaknesses and our strengths. It requires becoming a loving best friend to ourselves. It requires holding ourselves accountable but being patient with ourselves at the same time. To make much progress we have to continue getting self-issues in increasingly better working order. Progress is a journey. We would not attempt a cross country trip with a car that would certainly break down.

At some point we decide to engage the clutch, shift into first gear, give it a little gas, and begin to proceed in the forward direction. It also helps to have something specific in mind. Our goal should always be issues we are working to improve, changes that need to be made and a better version of ourselves in mind. We become a better person by making small incremental changes from within. It requires commitment to long term improvement. We throw out status quo and leave our comfort zone behind to take on change and to make continued progress.

As we travel down the road of life we realize how much potential that is being wasted and unused. We are not totally satisfied with what we are and where we are, and decide on doing something about it. All of these things are prerequisites to our making any progress. The good news is that we have unlimited capacity to grow and to change. We are designed to grow from dependent infants to wise, mature, responsible and capable individuals. The problem is that many of us stop growing or shift to very slow motion during our adult years. We become stagnant and complacent. We still have a lot of gas in the tank and should be using it to take us somewhere new.

Challenge:  How much progress are you making in life? Are you satisfied or dissatisfied? The power is within you to become the person you were meant to be. You cannot achieve your potential until you become involved, take over, and keep moving forward. Can you commit more daily effort toward becoming the better you that awaits? Become the better person you were meant to be by making a little daily progress on step at a time.

Wisdom: The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.   George Bernard Shaw

Spiritual: (NIV)

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:36

The concept of progress implies that from the time we are born until we die, we grow and advance as human beings. There is a secular and a spiritual aspect of this. To make progress spiritually implies we have entered into a personal relationship with God. He will send his Holy Spirit to be a part of our lives. If we let the Holy Spirit advise, guide and counsel us, we will increasingly progress into the spiritual person God designed us to be.

Prayer: Help me grow into the person you want me to be.
