We have two options; accept things as they are or choose to do something about them. This applies to nearly every aspect of life. If everything is as we want it to be, then there is no reason to make changes. If our life is not what we want it to be, we should attempt to do something to better it. Most of us have things about our life we find unsatisfactory. Are we guilty of settling for less than we should?
If asked we could respond with significant lists of things that are less than we want them to be. The list includes things we think are hindering our joy and happiness. It would include difficulties, mistakes, obstacles, disappointments and things directly affecting our sense of being. We might go back and change a past decision or change current conditions to achieve different and more desirable circumstances. How about things up front and personal affecting our self-esteem, family relationships, income and even our well-being?
After getting past the basics, we could start focusing on broader issues such as morality, crime, corruption, poverty, politics and the general state of the world we live in. The more that basic needs such as food and shelter become non-issues; the more apt we are to be concerned about the world around us. Many of us are guilty of giving these issues mostly lip service. We are rather uninvolved and unfocused until we feel threatened. As we look around and observe things going in what we consider the wrong direction, we get uncomfortable. Our sense of security and well-being becomes shaken and we start getting concerned.
There is a dynamic at work in our lives. Things are happening to us and around us. Some things we perceive as good and desirable, others, not so good and undesirable. If we are passive and minimally engaged we are more apt to find ourselves feeling the role of victim. We get caught up in feeling that things are happening to us that are beyond our control. This is true whether it involves basic needs or broader needs. The more involved and engaged we are, the less we will feel helpless. We are more likely to feel a sense of direct control and ownership in the direction our life is headed. There are two choices, act or be acted upon. Choose action over inaction.
Challenge: Your life belongs to you. The responsibility of what your life presently consists of and what it becomes in the future does fall squarely on your shoulders. If you want more you must do more. If you are not as actively engaged as you should be, you will likely suffer the results of getting much less of what life has to offer. If there are aspects of your life that are unacceptable, it is up to you to start doing something to improve it.

If we knew we could not fail, how would that change the nature of our life? We would have less fear, more confidence, more energy and dynamism to make something out of our lives. Would we be willing to try new things, take more risks, and live outside of our comfort zone? If we believe what the Bible has to say, those having a right relationship with God, have nothing to fear. They will not fail. They are already victorious.
