When Pigs Fly

Flying PigFlying pigs means the impossible is beginning to happen

The impossible – what nobody can do until somebody does. Author Unknown

Probable impossibilities are to be preferred to improbable possibilities. Aristotle

The world is divided into two classes, those who believe the incredible, and those who do the improbable. Oscar Wilde

There are many things that most do not believe can ever happen. Flying pigs is one event that very few, if any, have any expectations of ever seeing. There is great disparity in the various expectations or beliefs that people have as they go about living their lives.

There are those who are so skeptical and cynical they have a hard time believing the sun will rise in the morning. There are those who spend significant sums of money in expectation of winning millions of dollars in the lottery. Most are probably somewhere in the middle of these extremes. When considering believing versus non-belief or hoping versus no hope; it is probably better to ere toward the possibility that something improbable can happen. The sun is likely to keep rising for a long, long time. Some of the people who buy lottery tickets actually win the lottery. Chances are extremely high those never buying lottery tickets will ever win the lottery.

The unexpected does happen on occasion; that which is highly improbable happens frequently enough. The impossible does every so often become possible.  The point is that “pigs do fly”. That which has not happened and that which is never likely to happen does happen. When it comes to hope, we should always have hope. There are forces and variables as well as the unexplained that sometimes seems to favor those who have hope. If you never buy a lottery ticket you will never win the lottery. If you never believe that something good can happen, chances are your belief has some kind of negative impact on preventing it from happening. The concept of “self-fulfilling prophesy” supports the idea that whatever it is we can believe or hope for is more likely to manifest itself. On the negative side, those who expect only negatives are much more likely to get negatives.

We should have some room in our belief system for the possibility of pigs flying. It is likely we will never see a pig fly. It is more likely we may see a pig fly if we believe in the possibility it can happen.  At one time the possibility of a human flying was equivalent to a pig flying. We should not live in such narrow boundaries and confines that we are so skeptical or negative that we have nothing to believe in or hope for. (see above photo.

Challenge:  Expectations, beliefs, hopes, desires and aspirations are all very dependent on your outlook. If your glass tends to be half empty rather than half full, chances are you will never see a pig fly. If you keep looking for four leaf clovers, you will likely find one. If you keep looking at the stars for a “shooting star” you will likely see one. If you never do your part to bring about the improbable, the improbable will probably stay improbable.

Wisdom: There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know. Donald Rumsfeld

Spiritual: (NIV)

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matt 6:33

We live in two worlds, the secular and the spiritual. Most of what we see and believe is based only what we have seen and experienced in the secular world. Many of us believe in the spiritual world which is not limited and bound anything like the secular world. Many of us believe that we will eventually be freer and able to see and understand at much higher levels that we can in this world. It is easy to forget that this world is so very limited.

Prayer: Help me to see and understand that I have nothing to fear or worry about. You are watching over me.
