Mentally and physically able to choose, free to make one’s own decisions
Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is a freedom. Marilyn Ferguson
Liberty, taking the word in its concrete sense, consists in the ability to choose. Simon Weil
The truth is we are where we are, because this is where we have chosen to be. Randall Burkhalter
There are very few truly free people. The vast majority of those believing themselves to be totally free have self-imposed limits on their freedom. We may be free as far as living in a country that values personal liberty and freedom of choice, but many of us are limited by balls and chains existing within us.
To be truly free also requires freedom from self. Many think the right to vote and to physically go and do as we choose as freedom. This is freedom; it is an important freedom, but it is one form of freedom. The freedom to be does not exist on the outside; its foundation exists inside our inner being. True freedom happens from the inside out. Many of us with “miles”, age, and life experiences are aware of our own self-imposed limitations.
We may be mostly free, but are shackled by inadequacies, limiting beliefs, doubts and fears. Fear of failure; making mistakes and taking risks restricts freedom. We hide in our comfort zones. Those who are addicted to smoking, overeating, drinking, or other vices or compulsions are not truly free. True freedom exists on the inside and is manifested in how we live life. Anything restricting, controlling, or preventing development of our true potential hampers our freedom. Blaming parents, environment, or anything else reinforces our lack of freedom. Many people have a job which they hate and are unsuited for. On the outside a person is free to change jobs; on the inside they are not sufficiently free to find one that is ideal. Whether it is insecurity, fear, debt, lack of confidence or one of many other things, there is something enslaving this person. This person is not really free.
A person may be imprisoned or may live where physical freedom is restricted, but they can choose to be free in the manner that is most important; free on the inside. Our bodies, movements and choices can be controlled, but only we allow our minds and spirit to be enslaved or controlled. It takes strength of will, determination, purpose, discipline and other strengths to declare a sense of “freedom to be”. We can be free by throwing off the restrictions imposed by our slave master. Our lack of freedom is our own choosing. Many choose such bondage because it is less demanding in so many ways. Those who are truly free choose to be.
Challenge: Your life is about choices. It is about personal responsibility and accountability. Managing life and doing it to the best of your ability is your primary calling. It should be dynamic and proactive. Falling asleep at the wheel has costs and consequences. You are where you are because it is where you have chosen to be. If your life is less than it should be or where you want it to be, it is because you have limited yourself to where you are.
Wisdom: What is freedom? It means not being a slave to any circumstance, to any restraint, to any chance. Seneca
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and I will be given to him. James 1:5
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
Some believe “being free” requires freedom from living by God’s demands. It is exactly the opposite. We cannot be truly free without having a personal, spiritually oriented life that includes God in it. We may be free in the eyes of the world, but our soul and our mind are far from free. True freedom is freedom that exists from the inside out. This true freedom can only come from God’s Holy Spirit. He will lead us to true freedom.
Prayer: Help me to be free from my inner self and from the ways of the world.
